JAL : Recently I heared a news that Japan Air Lines was bankrupted. What I noticed was the name on its jet planes; Japan Airlines. If we make the acronym from that, JA is appropriate, isn't it ? Old pictures of the company displayed the former separated names on its jets. I've liked the crane on its tail fin. Just a nostalgia ? As for me I don't like merges of common nouns to make new words like ' airlines '. If you want to merge them by all means, you should turn front words to prefix for example ' Aerolines ' or use hyphen to connect them like ' Coca-Cola '. Further more I don't like the mark or logo of JAL; JAL + ）. It seems to me the company were killed by saber. It was killed by bankruptcy. Just a imagination ? HD : HD stands for ' hard disk ' like FD as floppy disk for me. If you say it stands for ' high definition ', then I wanna ask you " What definition ? ". I used to call it hi-res [hai･res] or high resolution of screen pixels. Typical sample is VGA ( Video Graphics Array : 640 x 480 = 8x80 x 16x30 ). Just a generation gap ? Blu-ray : I found this spell on news articles. What is 'Blu' ? If you want to mean it "blue ray", you should append 'e' to it like ' Blue-Ray '. Osaka Gas CM says "Keep Blue". I wanna ask "Keep what ? blue". You need Object. maglev : In U.S. news Japanese linear motor car was refered as ' maglev '; magnetic lift. I found pure English words cannot be made by lay linguists of Japanese men. I guess JPN = (linear motor)+car, USA = linear+(motor car). Just a sense ? jury / juror : In Japanese newspapers of English language Japanese juror are refered as "lay judge" or "citizen judge". I know there are some differences between jury system of Japan and U.S.A. But Japan imported whole court system from U.S. in late 19th century. We don't have to make new words to describe them. We must use pure English words like 'juror' instead of words translated to English from Chinese words made in Japan. Just a history fan ? BGM is ♪Sylvie Vartin♪. .. |
